litafrika: translating graphic novels – with Marguerite Abouet, Edwige-Renée Dro, Ulrich Pröfrock
June 20, 2024, 7:30 p.m.
Literaturhaus Zürich
Limmatquai 62
8001 Zürich
The events takes place in German and French.
The graphic novel co-authored by Marguerite Abouet is set in the bustling capital of Côte d’Ivoire, Abidjan. However, the main character in her graphic novel is not a superhero but a young Black woman. The topic of the event with Marguerite Abouet, Edwige-Renée Dro, and Ulrich Pröfrock revolves around the challenges of translating such novels accurately and contextually.
Driven by her curiosity about the themes she explores in her bandes dessinées, Abouet transitioned from her legal career to become a graphic novel creator, for which she has received multiple comic awards.
Dro's work is also feminist and historical. She focuses on the life experiences of Black women and the future of Africa.
With interested participants we can visit the exhibition "litafrika – Abidjan & Accra" at Strauhof (just a 4-minute walk from the Literaturhaus) after the event.
